- Minted during the twilight of the 19th century and early years of the 20th, this 1 Peseta silver coin features the youthful third portrait of King Alfonso XIII. Crowned king as an infant after his father’s death, Alfonso’s reign began in name from birth in 1886, making these coins poignant relics of a monarchy shaped from cradle to crown.
- The obverse bears the profile of the young monarch facing left, encircled by the legend “ALFONSO XIII POR LA G· DE DIOS,” or “Alfonso XIII by the grace of God.” This classical phrasing emphasized the divine right tradition that still underpinned monarchic legitimacy in Europe at the time, even under constitutional frameworks.
- Designed by Bartolomé Maura Montaner, the coin’s reverse displays the crowned coat of arms of Spain flanked by the Pillars of Hercules—symbols inherited from Spanish imperial legacy. The motto “PLUS ULTRA” (Further Beyond) reflects Spain’s historical maritime ambitions and global explorations since the Age of Discovery.
- Crafted in .835 silver with a diameter of 23 mm and milled edge, this coin was struck at the Royal Mint in Madrid. It reflects the technical refinement of Spanish minting during a time of domestic modernization and increasing political complexity leading into the 20th century.
